Competent Communication Blog: (Educ-6165)

My father demonstrates competent communication. No matter who he speaks with, he always demonstrates great communication.

What behaviors does this person exhibit that makes him/her effective?
He makes direct eye contact, speaks clear and at an appropriate volume, does not interrupt the other speakers, listens attentively, and uses appropriate gestures/body language.

Would you want to model some of your own communication behaviors after this person? Why or why not?
Yes. I would absolutely want to mimic some of the communication behaviors like my father. As a matter of fact, I would like to model all of them. He is one of the most influential role models in my life that I look up to for guidance and as an example. I think that I would be better at communicating with others if I model my father’s communication behaviors. I am a shy person, but I think if I practice a bit more, I will be better at it, especially using the way my father communicates with others as a guide.

  1. Hi Ashley,

We stated a few of the same characteristics for effective communication. Eye contact I would say is the most important because you feel like the person is actually listening to you. Gaining these characteristics for communication would be great. I definitely see that there are key characteristics to have. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Hi Ashley,

It sounds like your dad is an amazing person who you can learn so much from. I think all his communication qualities are amazing and I hope to take some of his qualities and try them for myself. I am also a shy person and therefore could benefit from learning the skills I need to in order to enhance my communication skills. Thanks for sharing.

Direct eye contact can really allow you to feel connected to one another as you speak. Your father is a great role model, his communication qualities are exemplary. All the best as we work at becoming competent communicators.

  4. Ashley,

What a great post about your dad. The characteristics you mentioned are great forms of communication. What a great example for you and your family. Eye contact is one form of communication I struggle with at times and I working to improve. Enjoyed your post!

  6. Ashley,
Your father does sound like an excellent communicator! I think that some of the most important aspects of communication are eye contact and not interrupting - both of which he demonstrates. How awesome that you have grown up with him as a communication role model! I myself have some trouble with eye contact, but I have come up with a few ways in which to hopefully improve. Do you have any areas that you consider strengths/weaknesses for yourself when it comes to communication?
