Play Items:
People supported play when I was younger by…
spending time with me and making time for play.
requiring participation during P.E and Recess.
having outdoor activities.
supporting my imagination.
Play is Different now:
Play is no longer the same. When I was a child, going outside and
playing with friends and family was “the” thing to do. I remember playing hide
and seek, freeze tag, racing, and even jump rope. We would stay outside for
hours and would be sad when it was time to go inside of the house. Nowadays,
children spend the majority of their time inside watching TV, playing video
games, texting, browsing the internet, and talking on the phone. I witness this
from my younger sister and cousins. They have nearly all if the electronics
that are available. As a child, I did not have the distractions (electronics)
that took away from my childhood fun. I hope that children learn to value the
importance of play and their childhood before it is too late. I hope they limit
their inside time with their distractions!
The role of play is important. It is something that we cannot
get back. I wish that every child gets the opportunity to have a great
childhood and play experience. I valued and took advantage of all opportunities
of play as a child. I sometimes sit and reminisce on my childhood. I really
enjoyed it and sometimes wish I could rewind time. As an adult, I will make
sure my child enjoys and gets the opportunity to have a wonderful childhood and
amazing play experiences.
I used one of the same quotes you did. I agree that play is a necessity. Love your toys too. My family and I take vacations to the beach every year. This year will be my sons first beach trip. I am super excited to share my experiences with him. Lastly, I too believe play is much different today than it was back when we were growing up. Crazy how times have changed.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I hope your son enjoys the beach! I definitely agree that it is crazy how times have changed.
DeleteWonderful post Ashley. Indeed play has an important role to play in the life of every individual, especially children. It is almost unbelievable that play as we know it seems to be loosing its savor with this generation. As adults we need to support children's right to play. They deserve to have the experience. Montessori says, "Play is the business of childhood".
ReplyDeleteThanks! I agree that we need to support children's rights to play. The definitely deserve to experience play.
DeleteHi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI agree that play is no longer the same. When I was a child, we would play outside all day long. Nowadays children are hardly outside playing at all. My four year-old nephew would much rather play "Angry Bird" on the I-pad than go outside and play. I think parents should make play more of a priority.
Hi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteThanks, that indeed was play. I believe there are now may advocates of play, we need to place ourselves in stategic positions and speak for the restoration of play time for children.
I had a childhood that I still remember with alot of fond memories.
