3 Meaningful Ideals from the NAEYC and DEC codes of ethics

We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child.

This is significant to me because, as educators and professionals, we should know that students look up to us as role models. We need to always display positive behavior, especially in the presence of our students. Some students may not have positive role models, so if we do this, we can make a difference in how that child ends up.

We shall honor and respect the diverse backgrounds of our colleagues including such diverse characteristics as sexual orientation, race, national origin, religious beliefs, or other affiliations.

This is significant to me because I believe in equality for all. I respect all people, no matter their race, religious belief, sexual orientation, etc. Because America is considered to be "the melting pot" we, as educators and professionals will always come in contact with people who differ from us, especially in the workplace. No one deserves to be treated badly for being different. As educators, our main focus should be on our students.

To provide the community with high-quality early childhood care and education programs and services.

This is significant to me because our children do no deserve anything less than high-quality. We need to do our best to be the best at what we do. Education is important! To help set a strong foundation for our children, they need high-quality early childhood care, education programs, and services.

  1. Ashley, I love all three of your ideals. I am most connected with "We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child," and you made a valid point that we are role models. It is true that some children do not have positive role models in their lives and may look up to us as role models. As educators, professionals, teachers or inspiring teachers, we will spend most of our time with children and it is very important that we possess positive attitudes throughout the time that we are able to share with them.

I enjoyed reading the 3 ideals that are meaningful to you the most!

  2. Hi Ashley,

This ideal, "To provide the community with high-quality early childhood care and education programs and services" can be taken seriously even by day care professionals not directly involved with day care.

You said, "This is significant to me because our children do not deserve anything less than high-quality. We need to do our best to be the best at what we do. Education is important! I feel like this is very important and I am beginning to feel responsible to change the current day care situation. I am aware that there are day cares that are definitely less than ideal, and the children there do not deserve this. It is time for us to find a way to make quality day care available in our country.

  4. Ashley,

I liked all of the ideals you chose. I really liked the first one you chose “We shall demonstrate in our behavior and language respect and appreciation for the unique value and human potential of each child.” I agree that we are role models for young children. It is important for us to stay positive even if it is hard. Children love to come to school and we do not want to change that attitude by expressing a negative attitude. Some children never see positive things at home and therefore look to school for the positive atmosphere.
    Thanks for your post.

  5. I agree! School may be the only positive atmosphere for some children, so we must make sure to always look past any negativity for our students.

  6. Hi, Ashley
I really agree with you on being able to demonstrate our behavior and language of each child and how it plays a big role in their lives. As a potential educator we are there for them to look up to. While being in the environment around children, you should always have a positive attitude. At such a young age, children only does the things they are taught. Even if they don’t have that role model in there home to learn from, that could be the only opportunity they have to obtain that positive role. When they see the other children taking after the role of the teacher they aren’t going to want to feel left out so they do the same as well to make that difference in the child’s life.
